Last resort

Last Resort
Restraining a person should be your LAST resort. But, in the event a person needs to be restrained you need to be prepared to do it the proper and safe way. Holds should only be used with caution and constant monitoring of the person in the hold and only until the person has indicated that they have regained self control.

Preventive Techniques
1. Identify the behavior levels that contribute to the development crisis and choose an appropriate staff intervention for each level.
2. Identify useful nonverbal techniques which can help to prevent acting-out behavior.
3. Use verbal techniques to de-escalate behavior.
4. Demonstrate CPI's Principles of Personal Safety to avoid injury if behavior escalates to a physical level.
5. Provide for the Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security of all those who are involved in a crisis situation.

You will learn:
1. Understand and develop team intervention strategies and techniques.
2. Recognize the importance of staff attitudes and professionalism in responding effectively to those in your charge.
3. Demonstrate physical control and restraint positions to be implemented when physical control is necessary as a last resort due to an individual's dangerous behavior.
4. Provide for the Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security of all those who are involved in a crisis situation.

Situational Role-Plays and Postvention
You will learn:
1. Apply the material covered in training to real-life situations.
2. Find ways to use the time after a crisis (Postvention) as a step toward preventing future crises.
3. Use a model for action after an incident that will bring about necessary closure, debriefing, and re-establishment of a therapeutic relationship with the individuals involved.
4. Provide for Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security of all those who are involved in a crisis situation.

CPI Children's control position

This position is designed to be used with children. You should consider using this position only with individuals considerably smaller than yourself.

*Demonstrate pull-through as a transition into position. Step behind the participant (child).
* Gain control of the participant's (child's) arms from behind and cross the arms in front of the participant.
*The arms should be positioned high on the participant (child) and secured by locking one arm under the other. This will prevent the child from slipping through and will minimize any pressure on the child's chest or abdomen.
* Position yourself behind the participant while maintaining close body contact and stand to one side. This position allows you to maintain support for the child as you reduce the child's base of support.
The auxiliary team members will monitor for safety and assist, if needed.
